The JNF was established with Theodore Herzl’s support in 1901. The guiding principle was laid down by Prof. Hermann Schapira. Early land purchases were completed in Judea and the Lower Galilee. In 1909, the JNF supported the founders of Tel Aviv. The establishment of the “Olive Tree Fund” marked the beginning of Diaspora support of afforestation efforts.

The Blue Box (pushke) has been part of the JNF since it’s inception. It represents the partnership between Israel and the Diaspora.

Major water issues face Israel today. Israel is wholly dependent on its 50 days a year of seasonal rainfall for its fresh water supply. Israel’s water consumption has grown some 50% since 1960. Rainfall has not. JNF/KKL has pledged to build 100 more reservoirs. Security for Israelis is also critical and again JNF/KKL is meeting the challenges of the 21st century by building security roads.
